What we do
Promote separate collection, engaged in quality
CIC is engaged in a wide range of activities, to enhance biological treatment (composting and anaerobic digestion) of source separated bio waste, green waste and other organic waste feedstock, so to obtain organic fertilizers, biogas and biomethane, an advanced biofuel.
Monitoring the quality of organic waste
CIC’s technical staff continuously surveys the quality of the organic waste collected in Italy: yearly about 850 composition analysis on organic waste have been done, from more than 550 Italian municipalities.
CIC’s surveys show the high quality of the food waste, characterized by a content of Non-Compostable Materials (NCM) below 5% (in waste) of the waste collected.
Traditional plastic bags still used for the biowaste collection, do represent a significant source of impurities ( 23% of the total amounts of non-compostable materials).
Cic’s quality assurance scheme for compost
CIC’s Quality Assurance Scheme named “CIC Quality Compost Label” is the final step of CIC’s monitoring activity, closing the biowaste recycling chain.
This Label is aimed to assess the quality of compost produced by composting and AD+Composting facilities being CIC’s Members.
CIC’s QAS procedures are a useful instrument both for the producers of compost, as a way of monitoring the recycling process, and for the consumers, who get and use a quality compost.
Guaranteeing biodegradability and compostability of materials and products
CIC started in 2006 a certification scheme, according to the EU regulation EN:13432 on compostable packaging, named “Compostable CIC”.
The labels helps citizens to recognize and use biodegradable and compostable shopper and bags (made of paper or bioplastic) and other compostable products.
Nowadays, more than 100 products are certified and labeled with the CIC’s compostability scheme and thus are compatible with the industrial composting process without affecting the quality of the obtained compost.
ICAW & CIC: International Compost Awareness Week
The Italian Composting and Biogas Association (CIC) joins and supports the International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW), the largest and most comprehensive education initiative of the compost industry.
The 2019th edition of the ICAW will be from May 5 – 11.
The goal of the program is to raise the awareness of the public regarding the benefits of using compost to improve or maintain high quality soil, to grow healthy plants, reduce the use of fertilizer and pesticides, improve water quality and protect the environment.
Throughout the week of ICAW, community and business events are held to encourage and celebrate composting. All types of composting – from backyard to large-scale are promoted. Events include tours of compost facilities, school gardening programs, compost workshops, lectures by a well-known gardening expert, compost give-away days, to name just a few.
Engaged in promoting organics recycling with ISWA international
CIC is actively supporting the activities of ISWA – the International Solid Waste Association, a global, independent and non-profit making association, working in the public interest to promote and develop sustainable and professional waste management worldwide.
Since 2012, CIC’s senior expert Mr. Marco Ricci – Jürgensen is chairing ISWA’s Working Group on Biological Treatment of Waste (WG-BTW), that addresses the biological treatment of the organic fraction of solid waste through aerobic and anaerobic treatment processes.
